Young full-back Travis Johnson has ‘stepped up’ according to boss David Artell to earn himself a new one-year deal with another 12 month option. Johnson made his first team debut away at Mansfield in the Checkatrade Trophy and he was used late on as a substitute in the top-of-the-table clash at Swindon.
Artell admits that it was ‘touch and go’ which way the pacey full-back would go, but he has been impressed with his step up into the first team squad.
The Crewe boss the club’s official website: “Travis needed a bit of time because he was close to Christian (Mbulu) and he has gone through quite a lot as a young man, so we had to put our arm around him a bit. He is a good kid and has a good heart.
“He has signed his deal and we are delighted. I said to him and his agent that there was a period when we didn’t know which way he was going to go. Was he going to go over the cliff and into the abyss or step up?
“Well, Travis has stepped up and really improved. He has really stepped up. He did well at Mansfield on his debut in the Checkatrade and what an experience it was for him to come on at Swindon.
The boss added: “Now, and I’ve told him, his next aim is to try and get in the first team next season. That is to play more than five games, more than ten games. He is coming along great.”
