The battle for the number one position continues in earnest with the club’s youngster Will Jaaskelainen saving an injury-time penalty from Frank Nouble.
His stunning save made sure Crewe collected a point against a solid Colchester side last night. Jaaskelainen regained his place ahead of Dave Richards against Swindon on Saturday after returning from International duty with Finland’s Under-21s.
Boss David Artell is pleased with the competition for the number one spot and has praised both his goalkeepers.
He said: “Will made a couple of saves from distance and to be honest I would have been disappointed if either of those had gone in but he has saved a penalty and preserved a point.
“We have two goalkeepers and it is good for Will for having Trig (Dave Richards) breathing down his neck. We are well stocked in the goalkeeping department.
“Will played a massive part in making sure that our unbeaten run continues and when we needed him he did the business. Dave did the same at Grimsby when the score was 0-0 and that is what you need from your goalkeepers.
He added: “You want them to save the ones they should save and then go beyond and save some that they shouldn’t.”
