'Difficult Choices With Selection Is What You Want'

29 November 2019

David Artell says that having a selection headache is a ‘terrific place’ to be in. The Crewe Alexandra boss has virtually a fully fit squad to choose from with only defender Olly Lancashire a long term concern for this weekend's FA Cup at Eastleigh.

Artell has chopped and changed his squad over the last few games and he says he will continue to do so, to make sure he gets the best out of his players. Last weekend, Oli Finney scored a brace in his first league start of the season against Morecambe but he was then left out for the mid-week trip to Forest Green. Artell says that having to make decisions like that only goes to show the strength we have in depth.

Ahead of our FA Cup second round tie at Eastleigh, the boss said: “As a manager it is a terrific place to be in. You want to have those difficult choices to make and I hope it continues.

“I’ve told them all, they will be needed. I know there are players who think they should be playing or want to play every game but I can only pick 11 players and we will need all of them.

“We might have one starting one week, then they play 10 minutes as a substitute and then might not be involved.

“They all have a part to play regardless if they are playing or not. They have to be professional and be ready when they are needed.”
