David Artell has hinted that Chris Porter is doing everything he possibly can to earn himself a contract extension at the club. The club’s leading scorer with 10 goals is out of contract next summer and he celebrates his 36th birthday in December but Artell appreciates the value the experienced forward is bringing to his team and his dressing room.
Porter has scored 37 goals in 100 games for the club and Artell has gone on record to praise the professionalism of the player.
The Alex boss says he will continue to be open and honest with his conservations with the former Sheffield United and Colchester man.
David told us: “It is a bit early at the moment to be talking about contracts and I won’t nail my colours to the mast just yet but I will continue to talk to Chris and be honest and fair. I will tell him exactly how it is like I’ve always done.
“He is a goalscorer and everyone wants those. You don’t show them the door too often so we will see.
“It works the other way too, we run the risk of losing him because of the way he is going. That can happen but I think we are all comfortable with the situation at the moment.
“I think it would take a lot to take him away and by that I don’t necessarily mean financial. It could be football incentives, like playing every week or being captain or whatever.
“I think Chris knows we are a good fit for him at this time of his career and he is for us because he is a top pro and a great lad. He is back near home, settled and scoring goals, so all he has to do is concentrate on scoring goals like he has been.
He added: “He could get beyond 20 goals if he carries on and then let’s see where we get to in March and April time.
