David Artell says that the decision to leave out midfielder Oli Finney and defender Christian Mbulu last night shows the strength in depth in his squad. The Alex boss made two changes from the side that emphatically defeated Morecambe 5-0 at the weekend for our top of the table at Forest Green last night.
The Alex boss made a tough decision to leave out two-goal hero Finney and defender Mbulu after they played their part in our impressive 5-0 win over the Shimpers.
The more experienced Paul Green and Eddie Nolan both returned to the side for the trip to the New Lawn. Crewe had the best two chances on the night but the game ended goalless.
David told the club’s official website: “I pick a team that I think will give us the best chance to win the game. That is what I did and the two of them understood. I spoke to Oli after what he did on Saturday with his two goals and he understands. He gets it.
“In the game, we had to make a decision at 0-0 going into the final ten minutes. Do we go for broke and try and get that goal or do we take what we have and if we score then that is a real bonus. We put Jonah on to make sure we were solid in midfield because Tom was tiring.
“We are learning all the time and we learnt from what happened at Newport when we had more of the ball than here (Forest Green) and ended up losing the game in stoppage time.”
