Ainley: "Nice To Be Back Amongst The Goals But It Was The Three Points We Came For"

25 March 2019

Our match-winner at Mansfield Town, Callum Ainley appreciates that it is good to have competition for places in the Crewe Alexandra side and he know that his role continues to be one of creating and scoring goals.

The Middlewich-based youngster was an unused substitute against Crawley Town and he had to watch as the team went on to bag six goals for the second time this season.

Ainley was given the nod by David Artell to come on at the One Call Stadium on Saturday though and after replacing the hard working James Jones, he would go on to turn the game in our favour with two expertly taken finishes.

His first saw him twist and turn in the box before drilling his shot home and his second saw him despatch Tom Lowery’s perfectly weighted pass with deadly accuracy into the far corner. It was vintage Ainely and his brace now takes his tally to six for the season.

Callum told iFollow The Alex: "When you are watching those type of games (Crawley) you just want to get on there.

"You can see everyone getting loads of space and there are loads of chances being created, and you just want to be on there yourself.

"I could see the Mansfield players were quite tired, the gaps were really showing. There was a lot of room for us to counter in, a lot of space when I came on.

"It was good to get a couple of goals. It just gives you a boost every time you score a goal and hopefully I can score a lot more from now on.

Callum added: "I have been taking a lot of time with the chances I've been getting lately, and not been getting clean shots away, but I was lucky here to get that half a yard and score.”
