Boss: "There Is Not A Number One Fixed In My Head"

2 July 2019

David Artell has admitted that he has not decided on which goalkeeper will start the season as our new number one. The club’s long serving goalkeeper, Ben Garratt, departed in the summer following the expiration of his contract and that has opened the door for either Will Jaaskelainen or Dave Richards to claim the one number jersey.

Artell is expecting a fair battle between the pair and says he is opened minded about who will get the nod to start the opening game of the season against Plymouth Argyle on 3rd August.

The Alex boss said: “The ball is in their court. On one side of the court is Will and on the other is Dave Richards, so we will see who has the best forearm, backhand, volley and smash. It is as simple as that for me.

“I expect it will be a good contest between them and at the moment there is no number one in my head. There are two number ones battling it out for the shirt.

“Will came in for a few games at the end of the season and handled it well. Trig started the season in the team but fell away a bit, in training more than anything. He has to make sure he gets back to the levels that saw him in the team in the first place.”
