Artell: "We Showed Great Character And Throughly Deserved The Win"

12 January 2019

David Artell says his Crewe Alexandra side showed great character to fight back from 2-1 down in the 87th minute to win this thrilling encounter deep into stoppage time.

After Chris Porter had coolly converted another penalty to take his tally to five in five, it was set up perfectly for Callum Ainley to slot home an injury time winner after an incredible goalmouth scramble!

Crewe’s 3-2 win over last weekend’s FA Cup giant killers, takes us to 14th in League Two.

Following the superb comeback win, Artell told crewealex.net: “I thought it was a thoroughly deserved victory and we showed great character to come back from 2-1 down to win it. To get an 88th minute penalty and then to go on and win it showed great character. We went for it, we were at home with our fans behind us and it is a very pleasing win for everyone, well apart from one, who thinks we are rubbish no matter what we do.

“He sits on the front row and hammers us, so I was glad we were able to shut him up today!

“We came off at half time and Lennie Lawrence said that we hadn’t given then a kick and he was right, I said thanks Lennie. We scored one, we should have scored two or three more at least. We put some great moves together and deserved more.

“Then we have given them two goals. The first one came from a long throw and then the second was calamity defending from us. They were two poor goals to concede.

“The conditions played a major part today and they had the wind in the second half. You could tell. We had to show some real character to get back into the game. Chris is a marksman and he has five goals in five games, so now he has to go and get ten goals in ten games. That’s his target.

“The pleasing thing was the manner of the last goal. There were deflections, a handball shout, one or two off the line, Dale had a go, Finney was in there and Jordan does well to find Callum for the finish. They were all in there trying to force it in. They wanted to score and win the game.

“Good teams score late goals and our late goals have got us four points from our last two games and that is real credit to the fellas.

“We were so good in that first half, controlling things and keeping the ball and that pays off later on because the opposition get tired and their energy saps. We kept it for long periods in that first half and it was no surprise to me that we kept the pressure really on in those final 10 minutes.”
