Crewe Alexandra David Artell says he wasn’t surprised by the reaction of his number one goalkeeper Ben Garratt in our 2-1 win over Carlisle United last night. Garratt made some uncharacteristic mistakes in our 3-3 draw with Macclesfield Town on Saturday, but he bounced back with another assured display against an in-form Carlisle side.
Garratt had an early deflected shot from Tom Parkes to deal with as it came through the lights and he came an collected crosses all night with great confidence. He had no chance with Gary Miller’s terrific drive for the equaliser just before the half an hour mark.
David said of his number one: “I said on Saturday that Ben has won us points this season and he knows he had a shocker at Macclesfield. He made some mistakes but everyone makes mistakes.
“It was just a one off and I wasn’t surprised with the way he reacted. He is a very level headed lad. I didn’t consider leaving him out. If I did that every time someone had a poor game or made mistakes we would be going through players like salt.
“Ben has a good season and although he didn’t have an awful lot to do in the game, he did what he needed to with competence. “
