Boss: "We Have To Stamp Out Conceding Sloppy Goals"

18 December 2019

David Artell says it is imperative that his Crewe Alexandra side eradicate conceding sloppy goals. The Alex boss has been left fuming by the basic goals we have conceded recently against Northampton, Eastleigh in the FA Cup and against Mansfield on Saturday when long balls have resulted in Will Jaaskelainen being lobbed as he advances from his goal.

Artel described Mansfield’s equaliser for Mansfield on Saturday as a ‘Sunday League goal’ and he wants to see a vast improvement.

The Crewe boss said: “I said after the game that Mansfield’s goal was like a Sunday League goal. You probably wouldn’t see a goal conceded as badly as that on a park.

“We were not set up properly from our corner and didn’t get into position quickly enough. We then had some of our players assuming that Eddie (Nolan) was going to head it forward and then he hasn’t and their lad is in.

“It was abysmal, so poor from us and we know we have to cut them out because that cost us two points on Saturday.

“I don’t mind if we concede thanks to a wonderful finish or 10 passes open us up - but we are not conceding those types of goals. We are conceding easily avoidable ones.”
