Artell: "We Got The Ball This Time Last Year And We Have To Keep It Going"

19 December 2019

Crewe Alexandra manager David Artell says he has not been surprised by his side’s consistent form over 2019 because he saw the signs heading into Christmas last season. Crewe had the best home record in League Two last season but were let down by our poor away form which was one of the worst.

Crewe managed to record away wins at the likes of Mansfield, Swindon and MK Dons in the second half of last season and Artell says it was vital that we transferred that level of away performance into this season.

The consistent Railwaymen are handily placed in 4th position in the table to be involved in the promotion mix but Artell believes that there is still a lot of work to do before we see where we are in April.

He told the club’s official website: “I am not surprised by the season we have had so far. I am more surprised by where we finished last season.

“I think everyone could see the improvement was coming. We got the ball rolling in the second half of last season and I would think that there is not many League Two clubs who have collected more points than  us in the calendar year.

“The progress has been made but there is plenty more to come. There is room for improvement. I think we have gone from being brilliant one week to terrible the next to brilliant and then okay. We need to be brilliant every week or as much as we can be. The successful sides are the most consistent ones.

“Now that doesn’t mean you will win every week. Have Manchester City been brilliant every week this season? No they haven’t and they are seen as one of the best in the world. That is the reality of it.”
