Boss Looking Forward To Season Opener Against One Of The Promotion Favourites

1 August 2019

David Artell says that welcoming one of the promotion favourites, Plymouth Argyle, to our ground for the opening game of the season is the perfect test. The Alex welcome Ryan Lowe’s Pilgrims to the Alexandra Stadium and Artell says it would place a marker of our intent if we can emerge with a positive result.

It has been a summer of transition for Plymouth following their relegation from League One and Lowe was quick to entice his assistant Steven Schumacher and five former players from struggling Bury. They have invested heavily on new signings and Artell appreciates that the opening game will be a tester.

Ahead of the seasonal opener at Gresty Road, the boss told us: “The fixtures computer has given us Plymouth at home and we have to play them all twice over the season, so you get on with it.

“It is a good one to start with. We are at home and Ryan is bringing his team to Crewe, so that only increases the interest. They will be well supported, as will we be, so it has the hall marks of being a good game.

“They have a new team. They have five players from Bury, so they are used to each other and know how they play. In some way they have half a team who are used to winning (with Bury) and perhaps some that are not, as they were relegated last season.

“I am sure Ryan and Schuy have got them going again. They have worked with them over the last couple of months and we know they are a good team with good players, but we will be focussing on what we need to do.

The boss added: “Hopefully we will play to our potential and there will be a lot of away fans making an unhappy trip back down to Plymouth.”
