Artell Praise For Match Winner Porter

Experienced striker up and running with brace against former club

Crewe Alexandra manager David Artell has praised ‘terrific’ Chris Porter after his two first half goals sunk his former club and got the Alex up and running this season.

Crewe reacted really well after a slow start and going a goal down to deservedly win 2-1 at a rain-soaked Boundary Park.

Porter headed the Alex level with a superb header from the edge of the Oldham box from Tom Lowery’s sublime pass and then he converted a penalty won by Daniel Powell. Crewe could have scored more after dominating much of the game but once again Porter proved our match winner.

Artell said of his veteran striker: “Ports was terrific for us. He led the line really well and led by example. The ball stuck up there with him and he never shirked his responsibilities. He occupied the centre-halves and did his defensive work at corners and set pieces really well.

“He was a big part in us defending corners and he has scored both goals. Not a lot has been said about his first goal but what a terrific header that was. He has headed it from 16 yards and it took something special to beat that goalkeeper with the form he was in on the day.

He added: “It is great to see him up and running but we are not surprised because he has done it all his career.”
