David Artell says that football greats such as John Terry, Jonathan Woodgate and Robbie Keane deserve all the praise in the world for having exceptional playing careers. The Alex boss says it will be great for our fans to see a serial winner and former England captain John Terry at the Alexandra Stadium this evening in his role as an Aston Villa coach.
Crewe faced Woodgate and Keane’s Middlesbrough side in the previous round of the Carabao Cup and both men were full of praise for the way the Railwaymen performed on the night. It took a dramatic penalty shoot-out in the end but many felt that Crewe had fully deserved to win in the 90 minutes after taking a 2-0 lead before the half-time interval.
Ahead of the visit of the Villans this evening, the gaffer said: “It is fantastic for our fans to see people like John Terry at Gresty Road. He should be treated in high regard for everything he achieved in the game with Chelsea and England. He is right up there and players like John are held in high regard by their peers and so they should be.
“We had Joey Barton here last season in the League Cup when we faced Fleetwood and of course Jonathan and Robbie were in the technical area in the last round. Woodgate played for Real Madrid and Robbie holds the goals record for the Republic of Ireland.
He added: “It doesn’t actually make difference to us, who is in the technical area, because we are trying to get the better of them and them of us. That is how it works and hopefully we can all have a drink afterwards and me and Kenny can pick their brains a bit.”
