Porter Deserves Impressive Goal Return In Second Half Of Season

29 April 2019

Chris Porter is aiming to score one more goal to take his own tally to 16 for the season – a feat that would see him equal the 16 goals he scored for his last club Colchester United during the 2016/17.

The 35-year-old is going to finish as the club’s top scorer this season but would have to go some to beat his personal best of 22 goals in 40 appearances for Oldham Athletic back in 2007.

Porter has scored 15 goals from 43 appearances this season but it is his form in the second half of the campaign that has been so impressive. Since Boxing Day and his goal against Champions Lincoln City, the former Derby and Sheffield United forward has scored 12 from his last 22 games.

Crewe boss David Artell told the club’s official website: “Chris is a goalscorer and I am not surprised that he will finish as our top scorer. We have worked hard with him and he knows the role we are asking him to play so well now. He is a bright fella and he takes things on board.

“We have worked with him and as long as that means he can get in positions to score goals then he is a happy man because that is what he does. His performances have been terrific, especially in the second half of the season when we changed our system to help him and play to his strengths more. He leads the line so well and we know he can score goals because he has done it for a long time over his career.

“I am glad he is reaping the rewards of all his hard work with the number of goals he has now scored because he didn’t play as much as he would have liked in the first half of the season.”
