Artell: "We Cannot Blame Red Card For The Goals We Conceded"

1 April 2019

David Artell was left disappointed that his Crewe Alexandra side did not adjust well enough to going down to ten men against Cheltenham on Saturday. Captain George Ray was sent-off for two bookable offences after 53 minutes with score level at 1-1 but with ten men, Crewe went on to concede two more goals, ironically scored by our former players Billy Waters and Luke Varney.

The Alex boss told the club’s official website that regardless of how many players we had, we still managed to concede two sloppy goals from our point of view.

He said: “It doesn’t matter if it is 10 versus 11 you still have to do your jobs and we didn’t it for their two goals in the second half. We shot ourselves in the foot with them and goals change games.

“We didn’t mark Billy (Waters) for his goal and then we were done on the counter-attack from our own corner. They were still two avoidable goals from our perspective and we cannot blame going down to ten men for that.”
