David Artell has told the club’s official website that our reserve game at Wigan Athletic has propelled some of his squad closer to his first-team selection for Vale Park. The Alex lost 1-0 behind closed doors against the Latics, who played a strong team against us on Tuesday.
Artell travelled to watch his fringe contingent as he looked to finalise his 18 for this weekend’s derby game.
The Alex boss told us: “It was a last minute arrangement. We want to try and fit a game in because we had a trialist with us and we wanted to be fair to him. Next week wasn’t possible because the Under-23s are playing, so John Dillon rang Paul Cook at Wigan and we cannot thank him or the club for hosting us. They were brilliant with us.
“It was a really good game, a tough game and they named a strong team. It was a good test for our lads and there were a lot of benefits to take from it. It was tough and the trialist was fine.
“Those who hadn’t had 90 minutes for a while, got those minutes under their belts and I got what I needed out of it. Some of them performed well and they could now be involved at the weekend. “
