Crewe Alexandra boss David Artell says he will travel to Blundell Park this weekend tinged with disappointment after his side failed to take our fate into the final weekend of the season.
Crewe’s fine run in the second half of the season had given us an outside chance of making a last ditch effort for the play-off places but Artell believes we ‘just ran out of games’ to perhaps mount that late surge. Defeats away at Port Vale and at home to Cheltenham Town interfered with a fairly consistent run of nine games.
Crewe had drawn at Cambridge, won 2-1 away at Mansfield and beaten Crawley 6-1 at home before losing 3-1 at home to Cheltenham.
We have bounced back in style to register another four straight wins, but Artell is disappointed we have fallen just short.
David told crewealex.net: “I am an optimist and I am sat here with a tinge of disappointment because we couldn’t quite take it to the final game. We wanted to be involved when the big prizes are handed out and get ourselves a ticket for the lottery of the play-offs.
“We wanted to give ourselves that chance on the last day and that would have been a terrific achievement, especially when you consider our away form before Christmas when we threw too many points away, or didn’t claim the points we should have done.”
