Crewe Alexandra have offered a trial period to the former Newcastle United midfielder Liam Smith. The attack-minded midfielder is set to feature for Alex Morris’ Under-23s at Barnsley this afternoon, alongside fellow trialist Lucas Dawson.

The 22-year-old previously spent a brief time on loan at Crewe Alexandra under previous boss Steve Davis – but an untimely ankle injury meant he returned to St James’ Park without playing a competitive game for us.

Smith also enjoyed a more successful loan spell at Blackpool in 2016 where he made 8 appearances.

The midfielder scored a fine goal and impressed against Crewe in the Checkatrade Trophy last season for Newcastle’s Under-21s. Peter Beardsley’s side ran out 2-1 winners that night.
