Artell: "Avoidable Mistakes From Crosses Have Cost Us This Afternoon"

29 September 2018

Crewe Alexandra’s winless run on our travels continued with a 2-1defeat at Notts County this afternoon to leave us 18th in League Two.

Goals from Rob Milsom and Elliott Hewitt gave County all three points after Jordan Bowery had levelled things up in the 14th minute.

Following the 2-1 defeat, David Artell told the club’s official website: “We are hugely disappointed to have lost the game because we were miles better than we were at Cheltenham, Port Vale and Manchester City, but we are in a results business and we didn’t get a result.

“I didn’t think we deserved to lose today but we have. That is us at the moment, we are just doing enough to lose the games.

“We scored a really good goal to draw level and had other chances to score another but then we didn’t stand up to them for a 15/20 minute spell in the second half and they scored when they are on top. When the opposition are on top, and it is going to happen at some point in a game, especially away from home, you have to show some character and stand up to that.

“At half time I said to them, we played well in the first half at Cheltenham and were not as good in the second half, but we managed to get away with a point. We did well against Port Vale in the first half but didn’t repeat that in the second half and ended up losing the game.

“I said to them come on it cannot happen again today. We played 4-3-3 and they had to match us up because we were on top in the first half but we made a mistake with a midfielder not doing his job properly and those mistakes have cost us.

The Alex boss added: “In the end, two crosses have cost us. It is two mistakes from us with people not doing their job properly and that is what makes it frustrating. I am as frustrated as the supporters, who have come here to support us.”
