U23 Report: Burnley 3-2 Crewe

1 October 2018

Crewe Alexandra Under 23's were defeated 3-2 at Burnley in their latest Professional Development League 2 clash.

Alex Morris's side had faught back from 2-0 down to draw level at the break, but the Clarets struck in the second half to record all three points.

There were four goals in 13 first half minutes, the hosts opening the scoring in the 24th minute when Daniel Agyei headed Anthony Glennon's cross home.

Striker Agyei doubled the Clarets' advantage within four minutes, powering past the Alex backline before driving a low shot past Will Jaaskelainen into the corner.

Crewe struck back almost immediately, halving the deficit on 32 minutes when Harry Pickering's crossed free-kick was headed in for an own goal by Burnley defender Ed Cook.

The comeback was complete just five minutes later when Lewis Reilly was felled in the penalty area, picking himself up to steer in the spot-kick.

That was that for a breathless opening 45, but Burnley did restore their advantage in the 58th minute - and it came in very unfortunate circumstances for Crewe.

Travis Johnson did well to halt Mace Goodridge in his tracks, but the attempted clearance bounced off the shins of Tinashe Chakwana & into the net past a helpless Jaaskelainen.

Crewe pushed in search of another leveller, but his time the hosts held on to record all three points.

Next up for Alex Morris' side is a trip to Sheffield Wednesday on Friday 12 October.

Crewe: Jaaskelainen, Johnson, Offord, Lundstram, Sass Davies (Onyeka 82), Raynes (Fenton 70), Heath, Pickering (Robbins 64), Reilly, Linton, Lynch. Substitutes: Odipe, Booth.
