Crewe Alexandra Under 18s were taught a harsh lesson in ruthless finishing after Barnsley put seven past Lee Bell's youngsters.
After encouraging performances & results of late, it was a day to forget in Yorkshire for the team after an underwhelming showing against a hungry Tykes side.
It was 4-0 to Barnsley at half-time, a number of fine finishes helping the home side to put themselves firmly in the ascendency.
Previously, the 18s have battled back from adversity, but that didn't happen on this occassion - mistakes in the defensive third allowing the hosts to go six up after the break.
Rio Adebisi did scramble a consolation goal for Crewe following a set piece situation from close range on 75 minutes, but Barnsley scored again before the final whistle to run out 7-1 victors.
Next up is a home meeting with Bolton Wanderers at Reaseheath, with the squad looking to put the Tykes result behind them.
Crewe: Booth, Adebisi, Woodthope, Odipe (Southern, 45), Fenton, Hartshorn, Priestman (Djalo, 45), Robbins, Heath, Linton, Onyeka
