Ben Garratt earned himself plenty of plaudits for two outstanding saves against Grimsby Town on Saturday. In the final five minutes of the first half, the Crewe number one denied Wes Thomas in a one-on-one situation and then was forced into a smart save to push out a shot from JJ Hooper. Those two key saves made sure we went in at the interval on level terms.
Second half goals from Corey Whelan and Shaun Miller gave us the three points in the end.
David Artell saved some special praise for his goalkeeper, who stood up to be counted when we needed him most. So much so that his two key saves saw him win the sponsors award for their choice of Man-of-the-Match.
David told the club’s official website: “Ben didn’t have too much to do over the 90 minutes but when we needed him, he was terrific. Those two chances towards the end of the first half were totally our own doing. We were sloppy and gave them those chances but Ben made two outstanding saves and he deserved all the praise coming his way.
“He saved us from going behind in the game and we know that goals change games.
“Ben has been outstanding for us over the last few games and he has to keep that going.
“Once we eradicated those mistakes at half-time and we didn’t give the ball way in dangerous areas, we were fairly comfortable. I think Ben had to tip one round the post in the second half but that was about it.”
