Artell: "This Has To Be A Turning Point For Us"

20 October 2018

David Artell was a delighted boss this afternoon after his hard working Alex side recorded their first away win of the season thanks to Jordan Bowery's wonderful goal with the outside of the boot.

Crewe could have made things a little bit easier with a second goal but Artell was delighted with another shut-out and more importantly the three points.

After the 1-0 win, the Alex boss told crewealex.net: “It was a wonderful finish from Jordan Bowery and we should have scored more goals than we did. The only real negative from today that for 15 minutes after we scored we didn’t play well and we didn’t pass the ball well enough.

“But saying that we thoroughly deserved the victory. We matched them up to play 4-4-2 and we did that because we have better players and that was proven today.

“The red card for Nugent had a massive impact on the game, of course it did, but it was a blatant red card. No doubt about it. He was the last man and Cuthbert was not coming round to cover for him. It was a big call to make early on in the game but the referee did well. It was nice to get one because we haven’t in three previous games at Notts County and at home to Manchester City and Swindon. We didn’t get them on those occasions.

“They had a go and put some crosses into our box and we made some blocks. I thought we were the better side and hopefully this will be a turning point for us. It was for us last season here, 2-0 down with 10 minutes left and coming back with those goals from Perry and Charlie. We then went to Lincoln and won 4-1 and we were up and running, we finished 3rd in the form table and it has to be the same again.

“I am just pleased for everyone that we have got that monkey off our backs, to get that first away win. We haven’t told them any thing different, we just want them to play away like they have at home and for large parts of the game they have done that today.

“It’s a great win, a clean-sheet and we go again at Yeovil on Tuesday. I said in the press conference that those fans who travel here or to Yeovil deserve that. They deserve all the lavish praise for their loyalty. I am pleased for them and thankful we got a result for them to enjoy tonight.”
