David Artell believes that Callum Ainley will return to scoring goals again very soon. The talented 20-year-old scored five goals last season and assisted in many more, but he has surprisingly failed to find the net this season and has now gone 30 matches without a goal since scoring a brilliant brace away at Swindon Town back in January.
The Crewe boss feels that Ainley will hit a purple patch soon and has used the recent form of Charlie Kirk as the perfect example. The fellow Academy graduate has scored four goals this season and has 9 goals in his last 34 games at first team level.
Ahead of our weekend trip to Stevenage, Artell said: “Callum knows what he has got to do to become more effective for us. He knows that he has to add goals and assists to his all-round game and I am sure it will happen for him.
“He has got that in him. He showed that last season. He is having a bit of a tough time but he has to keep getting in there and he will get there.
“It has clicked for Charlie. He is enjoying a purple patch when it comes to goals and assists and it will happen for Callum. Kirk has a decent goal record of late for a winger and I’m sure once Callum gets one, it will take some of the weight off his shoulders and he will go on a run.”
