Artell: "The Result Matched The Performance"

17 November 2018

David Artell said our first win in five games was thoroughly deserved after two goals from Callum Ainley and another fine finish from Charlie Kirk sealed three points against a Tranmere side that started the day in 4th place. A thrilling 3-2 win sees Crewe move up to 15th place in League Two.

The Alex boss told the club’s official website: “It was a thoroughly deserved three points. Hands down we deserved it and if I am honest, I think 3-2 flattered them. They changed their shape to match us up because we had been dominant in the first 25 minutes. They went to 4-4-2 and we made a mistake to go in level.

“In some ways, you can excuse it because we want Perry to do that. It doesn’t excuse it because we don’t want the ball ending up in our net but we want to encourage him to bring the ball out and pass it.

“We scored three excellent goals. They were all well worked and great finishes. The second goal was of a really high standard and wouldn’t look out of place higher. The third goal from Kirk was not an easy finish. It was a brilliant finish.

“The goals and the performance matched the result and that hasn’t happened recently. We have lost four on the spin, two in cup games, and it was here we go again but before that we were four unbeaten and doing okay.

“I asked Callum how many birthdays he had, and he said one and I said you will have one today because you are better than the player you are up against. He didn’t let us down and he was excellent.

“He ran out of steam a bit at the end but if he plays like that for 75 minutes every game and scores two goals every game then I will settle for that. He was excellent and the team were terrific.
