Ray Really Beginning To Realise His Potential

1 November 2018

Crewe Alexandra defender George Ray believes he is 'a late bloomer' and he has thanked the club’s management staff for sticking by him and honouring him with the captain’s armband. Ray has been captain most of the time under the reign of David Artell and he feels that he is beginning to recapture his consistent form that was sadly put on hold due to his injury problems last season.

The former Wales Under-21 international did make a full recovery from his hip trouble to play an important part in the run-in. He returned with 12 games remaining and helped us secure the safety spot of 15th.

George told the club’s official website: “I would say I am a bit of a late bloomer. I can only thank the manager and the staff for sticking by me when I was inconsistent for a couple of years. I used to play okay but then make a mistake and I do feel I have cut most of them out from my game.

“You are still going to make mistakes because everyone does but I feel I am a lot more consistent now.

“I know what my job is and that is to help the team get clean-sheets. I know I have to defend well, head the ball out when it comes in and make sure I take care of my man. I just want to do the best I can for the team and I am like anyone else, I want to play as high as I can in my career.

“I know there is more to come from me and I am still looking for even more consistency in my game.”
