Chris Porter on his former Sheffield United teammate Harry Maguire and how he is buzzing about the prospect of playing for England at the World Cup.
Crewe Alexandra forward Chris Porter is looking forward to four weeks of top class football when the World Cup in Russia kicks off this afternoon. The veteran striker joked that ‘it will be nice to see some other people’ have to run around as we prepare ourselves for a feast of football.
Porter will be hoping that England do well and that his former Sheffield United teammate, Harry Maguire can flourish on the biggest stage of all. Porter is still in contact with the former Blades defender and he has already sent him his good wishes as England prepare for the group opener against Tunisia on Monday evening.
Porter told the club’s official website: “I love the World Cup and it will be nice to see other people having to run around! England have been good recently and hopefully we can do well. I’m sure we will perform better than we have done in recent tournaments.
“It feels a bit different this time. They are a young squad and maybe some of the pressure is off them. I am sure they are capable of performing well and I hope Harry gets a chance.
“I hope he plays well. I think he is brilliant. He is a former teammate of mine from our time together at Sheffield United. I came up against him a lot in training and he is a great player. He is as level headed as they come and he is buzzing about the whole experience. I wish him well.”
