Artell: "Desire Often Defeats Ability"

17 July 2018

Crewe Alexandra boss David Artell believes that a ‘player is no good to him’ if his character and attitude isn’t right. Artell says that a lot of work goes in behind the scenes to make sure we sign the right players to blend into the team ethic. The due diligence conducted on a players’ background and personality is vitally important to keep the team spirit as a collective.

Artell told the club’s official website: “I have spoken before about recruitment being more of an art form than a science, but you can still look into the background and character of a player.

“That is very important because you can all the ability in the world, but if their attitude and application isn’t right then they are no good to a manager. Their personality has to fit into our dressing room culture.

“You can have maverick who may turn it on every now and again but have someone who does not his ability but does it more on a consistent basis.

“We are realistic. We are a League Two club and we know what market we are in, so we have to do the due diligence on their character and try and get the best we can for the money we have.”
