Mini-Break Will Energise The Players

5 January 2018

David Artell has granted his players a number of recovery days as they get over the hectic holiday period. The Alex collected nine points from a possible 15 on offer and Artell says it is important that they get a complete mental and physical break from football.

With Exeter City still involved in the FA Cup, our home fixture against the Grecians has been rescheduled for February, so that has given Artell the chance to give his players an extended rest.

Artell explained to the club’s official website: “With the nature of the fixtures over the festive period, coming every few days, why would we not take advantage of the free weekend and give the players a rest?

“I think it is important that players get a complete break from the mental and physical side of football.

“I’ve seen Pep Guardiola talk about the burn out of players and how the festive fixtures kills players. I would think that on average the EFL clubs play more games than the top teams. Of course, they are more athletic in the Premier League but the principles are the same. It is not that different.

“We have given the players the chance to re-energise and completely get away from the place for a few days. They will work extremely hard in the build up to the Carlisle game, so that is ample time with us not having a fixture this weekend.

The boss added: “Players need a break and a rest. They were in all over Christmas. I think they had one day off with all the games and the preparation we had to do for the matches, so this gives them a chance to recharge and see their families for a bit as well.”
