Artell: "Victims Of Our Downfall"

23 January 2018

David Artell was relatively pleased with his team’s overall performance against promotion hunting Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday but says that it counted for very little after he suffered our 17th league defeat of the campaign. Wycombe Wanderers snatched a late winner to win 3-2 and Artell says that it is positive results that count at the moment.

David told crewealex.net: “There were some real positives to take from the game but we didn’t get anything to show for it. It is about winning football matches and if you concede three goals in the manner we did then you are not going to win too many games.

“It is all about getting the results at the moment. If the performances come with that then that’s great but we need some points.

“I’m sure those who went to Morecambe didn’t particularly enjoy watching the game but we won the game. Now I don’t want us to play like that every week because we want to play some good football but we also have to grind out some results.

“We defended fairly admirably against Wycombe’s style of play and we defended the set-pieces reasonably well but we had three in the wall for the first goal and they had an overload at the far post. Two contacts later and it’s in our goal. The referee has played his part in the second goal and the third one is a genuine mistake. We have let them get in behind from a flick on and he has poked it in.

The boss added: “We were victims of our own downfall and we cannot let that happen. I’m sure the fans who came on Saturday and got behind us will see that it is not for a lack of trying. They knew that we didn't deserve to lose."
