Artell: "We All Have To Do Better"

22 December 2018

David Artell could not disguise his disappointment as his Crewe Alexandra side slipped to a third straight defeat at the New Lawn this evening.  A deflected effort from Joseph Mills on the stroke of half time proved the difference on the day, but again Crewe were left to rue missed chances to salvage something from the game.

Following the 1-0 defeat to Mark Cooper’s side, Artell told the club’s official website: “It wasn’t quite good enough again and we have to be a bit better. We all have to be better. There was some home truths said in the dressing room. Some players have been honest with themselves and some of them have kidded themselves on again.

“It is my job to tell them and I will. The performance was good again but again we haven’t taken our chances and we had enough of them to have got something from the game. The performance was decent but it is no points but I am not having that unlucky losers tag again. It’s just losers because we have no points from the game when it should have been.

“We are not kidding ourselves off and if everyone had given 5% more and taken more care in the final third then we would have got something. Ryan Wintle had one or two chances, so did Shaun. Callum had a great opportunity in a 3 v 2 situation but he has blasted it over the crossbar. In training, he would taken that and placed it in the bottom corner of the net. That’s the difference and we have to transfer what they do in training into the games.

“Jordan had the best chance cleared off the line and in my opinion that should have been a penalty because he has touched it past the goalkeeper and he has gpone on and clattered him.

He added: “Their goal sums up our luck at the moment. You make our own luck but it has hit George and gone in. “
