Reilly Brace Inspires U-23 Victory Over Tykes

4 April 2018

Lewis Reilly scored a dramatic injury time penalty to give Crewe Alexandra’s Under-23s a deserved victory over their Barnsley counterparts this afternoon at Gresty Road.

After missing a number of good chances to have the game put beyond the young Tykes, Alex Morris’ side had to stage a late comeback to claim all the points after they trailed 2-1 entering the final few minutes.

Reilly had originally given Crewe a deserved lead just after the half an hour mark with a smart header - but with the Railwaymen unable to find a killer second goal, the Barnsley youngsters were always in the contest and staged a remarkable fight-back to score in the 80th and 82nd through a couple of trial players.

Crewe showed great character though to draw level through defender Billy Sass-Davies. The Welshman headed home a free-kick with four minutes left on the clock and when Travis Johnson was felled in the box, Reilly kept his composure to put his spot kick beyond Greatorex in the Barnsley goal to seal an entertaining climax to the game.

Tom Lowery, Ollie Finney and Lewis Reilly all featured for the Alex.
