Lunt: "Contract Trio Should Stay"

18 April 2018

Kenny Lunt, who has been with Crewe Alexandra since the age of 9 and came through our Academy to play over 400 first team games for the club, says that he would advise Charlie Kirk, Callum Ainley and James Jones to sign their new contracts.

The club’s assistant manager knows the club inside out and says that they will always do what is in the best interest of the player. Lunt says that the players have to be ready to cope with a step up in class and he has encouraged them to remain with us to continue their development.

Kenny explained to the club’s official website:  “My advice to them is to sign their contracts. This club has stood by them and given them every opportunity to make it as a professional footballer, so all we are asking for is a bit of loyalty in return.

“We have spoken to all three of them and it has been all positive. In my opinion I don’t think they should go this summer. I don’t think two of them are ready to go and one has been injured for 10 months.

“I don’t think Callum and Charlie are ready to go and I would tell them that even if we were offered £5 million. Now, the club would probably say that money is too good to turn down and I understand that, but my opinion wouldn’t change. I would still tell them.

“They have got some development to go and when they are ready, we will tell them like we did with George Cooper. I think we were 4th or 5th from bottom at the time but we still let one of our better players leave because we felt the time was right. That is what I am telling them now.”
