David Artell’s said that Saturday’s performance against Morecambe should have come with an over 18 certification.
The Crewe Alexandra boss was understandably disappointed by aspects of the performance, but was delighted that his side got over the line to win it 1-0 thanks to Shaun Miller’s late finish at a corner.
In a game short of genuine chances, the honest Crewe boss says his players were left scratching their heads after failing to hit the heights of previous weeks. You do get games like that over a long season and Artell says that the pleasing aspect was that we didn’t play at all well, but won the three points.
David told us: “I said to the players afterwards that you have won a game of football when you have played poorly. Trust me, that is a skill in itself.
“The game will not live long in the memory but we won it. I am pretty sure that we would have lost that type of game before Christmas, so we can take the positives from that.
“The players were disappointed with the performance and were asking themselves why it happened because we have played well over the last 10, 12, 15 games.
“We have said to them that when it happens it is important to watch it back. Even more so that we win 3-0 or 4-3 or whatever, because there were a lot of mistakes made and we got nowhere near the tempo in the opening half an hour.
He added: “When you have a performance like that, it is important not to lose and we went one better. I would advise anyone watching it to be over the age of 18 but in the end it was a good result.”
