Artell: "We Got The Reaction We Wanted"

9 September 2017

David Artell had stated in the build-up to today’s game that his Crewe Alexandra players have trained well all week and were determined to put the wrongs right following last weeks’ display and defeat at Grimsby. His Crewe team responded in the most perfect way, scoring five goals at a joyous Alexandra Stadium.

The supporters departed dancing in the rain after two goals from leading scorer Chris Porter, and second half strikes from George Cooper, Callum Ainley and Perry Ng sealed a thoroughly deserved three points.

Chesterfield found it a struggle to contain a rampant Alex all afternoon, but they did manage a consolation for their effort when a Kristian Dennis header was deflected against the crossbar and hit Eddie Nolan on the way back down to prevent us achieving a deserved clean-sheet.

Following his side’s impressive 5-1 win, Artell told crewealex.net: “We got the reaction we wanted and I told them in there that if they pass the ball then there aren’t many teams who can live with us. They have to show that courage when it is 0-0, we are 1-0 up or 1-0 down.

“We have to show that courage and do it again on Tuesday night.

“We got that final ball right in the second half. We were good first half. We were terrific second half. I felt we should have been more than 1-0 up but we made up for that in the second half.

“Young Tommy gets us playing but it wasn’t all about him. Walker and Wintle went and got on the ball. We missed that last week at Grimsby across the board.

“It’s a good win, a very good win but we have got to do it again, do it again and again.

“Ports came off and said you have cost me a matchball. We had a laugh about it but I’m sure he is loving life at Crewe at the moment.

“We had told Perry to work on his leg foot shooting and lo and behold he has come inside and scored with his left foot. It is great when those things come off.

“Callum was unfortunate not to start the game, really unfortunate, so I was delighted he scored today. I thought the subs were terrific, that was the first thing I said to them afterwards. It is about the group, the 16, 17, 18 of them who are all involved today.

“It is three points and now we want three points on Tuesday night. We have to earn the right to play.”
