Players Have To Keep Pushing Themselves To Be The Best They Can Be

Crewe Alexandra boss David Artell says he will continue to be straight and honest with his players as he searches for that winning formula again.

Two late goals at Wycombe Wanderers last night saw three points cruelly snatched from our grasp at Adams’ Park and Artell says that he and his staff will continue to work hard out on the training ground as we aim to turn around a disappointing run of four straight defeats.

Artell has reiterated that places are very much up for grabs and he swapped and changed his personnel last night in the wake of Ryan Wintle’s injury. Zoumana Bakayogo, Perry Ng and Jordan Bowery were all recalled to the starting XI in our 3-2 defeat.

Ahead of this weekend’s trip to Coventry, Artell said: “It all comes down to who has earned their place. There will no waffle coming from me. I will be straight and honest with them as I always am.

“If they believe they should be the team and they are not then I will explain to them. If I leave them out then I talk to them.

“If I make mistakes then I am the first to apologise. That is in my nature and I welcome those players to knock on my door and have a chat. It is an open house here and I’ve always said that if you put the performances in then you will get a chance. Then it is up to that individual player to grab it.

He added: “As I’ve said many times, a professional footballer is responsible for their own career. They are self-employed and they have to do everything they possibly can to push themselves as far as they can.”
