David Artell has told crewealex.net that Jordan Bowery deserved to keep his place in his side after being one of our most consistent performers in recent weeks. The striker partnered Chris Dagnall against Stevenage with our leading scorer, Chris Porter, used from the substitutes’ bench in our 1-0 win. Bowery repaid the manager’s faith by scoring the only goal of the game in the 94th minute.
The Crewe boss said: “There is always thought in our decisions and I am paid to make those big calls. That is the job. It isn’t done off the cuff and we assess everything to give us the best chance of winning the game.
“I don’t get it right all the time, far from it, but that is why I took the job in the first place, I wanted to make those tough decisions.
“You can say it was a big call to leave out our leading scorer, in Chris Porter and go with Jordan, but no more so than bringing Trig (Dave Richards) in for Ben Garratt or putting young Harry Pickering on with ten minutes to go with the score 0-0. What if he had made a mistake and we lost 1-0? Those are the decisions you have to make.
“Jordan has scored the winner. That’s why he is at the club. That is why we wanted to sign him in the summer.
“When you look at the running stats, he has been right up there in the last few games. That will surprise a few people and it surprised us. Now it isn’t all about how far you run or at what intensity but it shows he is putting the work in for the team.”
