Walker's Versatility Has Been Vital

7 November 2017

David Artell says we are fortunate that Brad Walker can play in a number of positions for the team. Walker signed from Hartlepool United in the summer and has already played in various roles in both midfield and in defence, either in a back three or as he did against Rotherham in the FA Cup alongside Michael Raynes.

Walker was excellent against the Millers' towering threat Kieffer Moore and he marked a solid all round display by heading the equaliser barely two minutes after the restart. It was his first goal for the club in a competitive game.

Artell says that the versatility of Walker has been important this season, even more so when you consider the injuries to James Jones, Ryan Wintle and centre-half George Ray.

The Crewe Alexandra boss told the club’s official website:”Brad is a good player and that is why we wanted to bring him to the Football Club. He is a real asset for us because he can play in various positions. He has shown that he can play in more than one position and his versatility has been important for us.

“He has had a tendency to perform better at centre-half but that doesn’t mean I will pigeon hole him in that position. He came on against Notts County as a holding midfielder and for 20 minutes he was the best player on the pitch by a country mile. I know it was 20 minutes but he went in there and stopped the ball going to the two big lads they had put on. He was terrific that night.

“That performance went a long way to us winning that game and he was good in his distribution as well.

The boss added: “Of course, we will consult Brad going forward to his best position but we have needed him in all positions this season and he has been great for us.”
