Versatility Gives Us Options

23 November 2017

David Artell says he elected to change his midfield personnel on Tuesday night to give us more legs in the centre of the pitch.

The Crewe boss used the versatility of Harry Pickering and Perry Ng to surprise everyone with a change around at Morecambe and it worked to perfection with the two youngsters working their socks off and Ng popping up with a priceless winner five minutes from time.

Having the likes of utility men like Ng and Pickering certainly gives the manager options in various positions and that is before you consider the fact that Callum Ainley came on at the Globe Arena to have a massive impact in the final 20 minutes. Ainley created the goal for Ng and he continued to retain possession well in the opposition half of the pitch.

The Crewe boss told crewealex.net: “I changed it to give us a bit more legs in midfield. Conor (Grant) has come in and played a lot of games. Callum has played a lot of games and sometimes finds it hard to play Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday.

“We wanted some fresher legs in there if you like because we knew it was going to be a battle at times. The two young lads got around the pitch well, won possession and passed it well. They helped the back four out and it helped us be resolute and compact.

“Because the likes of Perry and Harry can play in various positions and have done so in the Academy, it does give us options, especially when we are missing one or two through injury.”
