Stubbs Patience Pays Off

23 November 2017

On loan defender Sam Stubbs was handed his first league start at Morecambe on Tuesday evening and the Wigan Athletic youngster performed admirably on his 19th birthday.

Stubbs helped us achieve a clean-sheet and provide the platform for Perry Ng to drive home a terrific winner on 85 minutes.

David Artell was full of praise for Stubbs and highlighted his potential leadership qualities after he helped organise us in the dying minutes to see out the game.

The Crewe boss told the club’s official website:  “Sam has had to wait patiently for an opportunity and he knows it is up to him to take his chances when they come along. He had previously played a couple of times in the Checkatrade Trophy and being the honest lad he is, he would probably have wanted to do better but he is still young.

“He played against us in pre-season for Wigan and he was terrific. That is why I was eager to bring him in.

“On Tuesday night, we thought that Sam would come in and head the ball. He did that for us and that is what we were on about. He has great courage and although he is a teenager, he isn’t afraid to be vocal and organise.

He added: “It is a man’s game and Sam is a man. He has had to be patient and he did well for us.”
