Richards Consistency Sees Him Retain No1 Shirt

14 November 2017

David Artell says that goalkeeper Dave Richards has deserved his run in the team and he says the Welshman has to continue to play well to keep ahead of Ben Garratt.

Richards has now kept his place for the last 9 games and has impressed despite us winning just three of those particular matches.

The Crewe Alexandra boss told crewealex.net: “Dave has come into the team and done well. We thought he would because he is a good goalkeeper. That is why he remained at the club.

“You have to trust your players and give them that chance and that is the decision we took with Trig. He has done well and I don’t think he has made a mistake for any of the goals he has conceded.

“Ben is an excellent goalkeeper and I just felt he needed a break, both mentally and physically. I am sure he will benefit from the rest and I feel he will come back even better.

“He will get his chance and I know he is chomping at the bit to get back in. It is a nice headache to have, especially with Will (Jaaskelainen) as well, as an up and coming young goalkeeper.

“The competition is good and it is tough on them because only one of them can play.”
