'Callum Is A Wonderful Footballer'

24 November 2017

Callum Ainley will continue to be managed correctly according to his manager. David Artell says it is easy to forget that the Middlewich-based youngster has only recently just turned 20 years-old.

Ainley has already amassed 72 first team appearances in all competitions and most notably scored the winning goal against Rotherham United in the first round of the FA Cup.

Ainley came off the substitutes’ bench at Morecambe on Tuesday night in our valuable 1-0 win. Artell described him as ‘the best player on the pitch’ for the final 20 minutes.

The Crewe boss told crewealex.net: “I don’t think the Morecambe staff could believe that we had Callum on the bench. He was excellent when we came on and him and Lewis made an impact to help us get a result.

“He is still a young boy. He is only just 20 and we have to manage him correctly. He will have his up and down days like all young players do but he has had more ups than down.

“He did ever so well for us on Tuesday and I was delighted with his contribution. I’ve said to all our subs that they have an opportunity on the bench to see the game but not be involved in it. When we do need them they can see where they can be a success in the game and make that impact.

He added: “Callum and Lewis both took that on board and that allowed us to take the game away from Morecambe in the last 20 minutes.”
