Artell: "Decision Making Has To Better"

28 November 2017

David Artell has said that he will be working on his side’s decision making when we are trying to play out from the back. Crewe surrendered possession far too easily for Luton’s winning goal at the weekend and although Elliott Lee was clearly stood offside and preventing Dave Richards from having a clear view of Luke Berry’s shot, Artell was understandably annoyed by the manner of the goal.

The Crewe boss told the club’s official website: “The linesman has had a shocker and I had a phone call from David Allison (Head of Referees) apologising on his behalf. All you can do is accept it and move on but it wasn’t a difficult one to get right. The lad (Lee) is two yards offside and Trigger has to look round him to see the ball. If Lee hadn’t been stood there, Dave would have saved it.

“Saying that, we shot ourselves in the foot. We gave the ball twice in the matter of seconds and we will be working on making the right decision when we are deep like that. It was our throw-in and we gave it away, so we work on making sure that we find the right way out.

“If a player cannot be found with a pass and it is 100% on then just whack it. The objective is not to give it away when you are close to your own box.

“Both of Luton’s goals were avoidable and that is why I was so disappointed.”
