David Artell praises his hat-trick hero and player of the season...Chris Dagnall

Crewe Alexandra manager David Artell says he is delighted that the club’s double Player of the Year Chris Dagnall isn’t one player he needs to be talking to this summer. Dagnall, 31, ended the season with a hat-trick to take his individual tally to 17 goals for the season.

The striker also collected the fans and his team-mates vote for their player of the season after the 4-1 win over Barnet.

Artell told crewealex.net: “Thankfully Daggers is under contract and he is one I don’t have to worry about. I just want to see a picture of him of him on a sun lounger with the match ball!

“I was delighted that he got his hat-trick. I said to him before the game that if people are thinking this is a dead rubber then go out and score three and he did! He got the match ball and he deserved it. He has a great attitude and is a like a kid in a sweet shop when he plays. It was like he was playing in August not on the last game of the season.

“It is three more career goals to his tally. People don’t say he has scored 200 plus career goals but five of them came on the final day in dead rubbers.

Artell added: “He is a great example to the younger one. He sets the tempo and he rightly gets the plaudits and I’m not surprised everyone saw him as their player-of-the-season, including his team-mates.”
