David Artell says that he has to now use Jon Guthrie’s departure from the club this summer as an opportunity to improve his options. The Alex boss is a big believer in one door closing, is another one opening for someone else and he is actively seeking a suitable defensive replacement for Guthrie.
Guthrie, 24, is set to sign for a League One club this summer, after rejecting Crewe’s offer of a new deal and Artell says we have to move on quickly. He has already signed Perry Ng on a new deal and has spoken to one or two potential targets as well.
The Alex boss said: “Jon's been good for this football club and I wish he'd stayed but he goes onto pastures new and we'll see where he ends up, I wish him all the best. It's yesterday's chip paper now.
“I think he should have stayed, I still think that. But he told me we couldn't have done anymore and text me to thank us for everything the club has done for him.
He added: “Whenever someone leaves a club I see it as an opportunity, that's the situation. If we get better in we have improved, and we have to make sure we take that opportunity.”
