Artell: "Up To Me To Fill The Gaps"

12 May 2017

Crewe Alexandra boss admits recruitment will be key to improvement.

Crewe Alexandra manager David Artell has told the club’s official web-site that he is far from happy with the club’s final league position and he says he will work tirelessly to make sure that he fills the gaps in his squad after he released six players earlier in the week.

The Crewe boss is hoping that the likes of Ollie Turton, George Ray, Jon Guthrie and Dave Richards will follow Ollie Finney’s example and sign new contracts this summer.  Artell is still talking to experienced midfielder Danny Hollands about a new deal after the former Portsmouth and Bournemouth man proved his fitness following his tendon injury.

Artell told the club’s official web-site: “There are some gaps in the squad and there may be some more. That will depend on who signs and who doesn’t. I hope they all do, so we will know what we need over the summer.

“After the Barnet game, I told the players that it will be evolution. We want to change enough to make sure we are not looking over our shoulders again. We know we have to improve and if we can do as well as we did in January when it came to strengthening the team then we should be much better off.

“We worked hard to get Callum (Cooke) and Jordan (Bowery) into the club and they improved us, they helped us. That is what we will be aiming to do again.”
