Artell: "Difficult Decisions Had To Be Made"

11 May 2017

David Artell on retained list decision making.

Crewe Alexandra boss David Artell admits that it was difficult to release players this summer but he stresses that every individual case was discussed by his management team. Artell admits that some such as Ben Nugent were a bit unfortunate not to be offered fresh terms but that others had not done enough to warrant a contract extension.

Artell told crewealex.net: “It was different for different players. Some we didn't think had done enough, some had intimated they wanted to leave, some wanted to move closer to home so there was no point offering them anything.”

“Some, we don't think we can get better than so we'll try to keep them.

“We'll speak to Danny (Hollands), we want to keep him and we'll be offering him something in the next couple of weeks.

“He's done terrific with his injury, he has made our minds up.

It's not a dictatorship, we are very much a team and everyone has a say.

“We don't want to change too much but we have to change enough so that we don't end up 17thin the league again.

He added: “Hopefully we'll do well in the transfer market and I think we should have a good summer. I genuinely believe we have a good chance of success next year.”
