Boss Provides Warning To Club Youngsters

30 March 2017

Artell explains why selection will not be automatic under him.

Crewe Alexandra manager David Artell has warned the club’s younger players that ‘being selected for the first team is not a given’.

The Alex boss says that the hard work starts now as he assesses his squad in readiness for a much improved season.

The Crewe boss told the club’s official web-site: “Sometimes at this club there is a perception from the younger players that it is a given that they will be selected for the first team.

“They automatically think or assume that it is just going to happen and I can assure them that is not the case. They have to work their socks off, every day, to get that chance and then it is up to them to play well enough to keep the shirt.

“They have to work hard to get there. I went through it as a young player at Rotherham and the first thing they need to do is make sure they put a shift in. They have got to run around and when I say that, it has to happen in training, in the U-23s and if they get there, the first team.”
