Artell: "We Showed How Good We Can Be"

4 March 2017

Dave Artell gives us his post match reaction from Fratton Park

Following a fantastic 1-0 win over Portsmouth at Fratton Park in front of over 16,000 fans, David Artell told the club’s official web-site: “I am a very proud manager. That was eleven lads given everything for the cause, playing for the shirt, the club, the supporters and themselves. They sweated blood for the cause and ran around. That is what you get and I thought we were the better team. If I’m being overly critical, we should have won by more because we had some great chances and it could have been two or three.

“I cannot give them enough credit and the fans who came down here can see that today. That is how good we can be. The inconsistency does infuriate me but that has turned Tuesday around and its the perfect way to end what started out as a disappointing week.

“It is up there with our best performance of the season. Grimsby didn’t pose as many problems as a Portsmouth team at home do and tactically we were spot on and as I’ve said it should have been more.

"Portsmouth are a very good side, they are up there challenging for promotion but I thought we had the better chances. We were compact, worked hard and looked a threat on the counter attack. We did a lot of work on that and it showed. They had an early chance when Doyle headed over, Roberts placed a free kick on the roof of the net and had one that flashed across the six yard box, those look more dangerous than they actually are. They had a lot of the ball but we limited their chances.

"We used the crowd as fuel, we knew we could use that to our advantage and the pressure was on them. The game plan went to plan. The players believed in and they got their rewards.

On his match winner, George Ray, the boss said: “It was a fantastic header and he should do it more often because he is very good in the air. He told me he has scored three in 90 well he needs to score more.

“He had that real desire to get on the end of Cooke’s cross. That is what we have been telling them. It was a terrific header and a fantastic performance.”
